Hamblen County has a strong background with area agencies and networking on behalf of family programs. Program area focuses address health and safety, human development, food and nutrition.

Educational programs focus on strengthening individuals, families and communities by addressing critical issues and needs, such as teaching parenting skills, improving nutrition and health, managing family finances, addressing child care needs, and others.

Co-Parenting Education

Court mandated co-parenting classes are offered through this program. We focus on learning how to parent apart and keep children out of the middle during a divorce.

Homebuyer Education

Family and Consumer Science programs are informative programs that are empower individuals and strengthen our county. Our goal is to positively impact the physical, social, emotional, and economic well-being of Hamblen County residents.

Our Content Areas Include:

  • Nutrition and Food Safety- Eating well and handling food safely.
  • Community Health- Living a healthy lifestyle and managing health problems.
  • Human Development- Communication skills and lifespan changes.
  • Consumer Economics- managing and saving money.
  • Environmental Health and Housing- healthy and effective homesteads.

The Tennessee Nutrition Consumer Education Program’s mission is to empower limited-resource families to:

  • Reduce the risk of poor nutrition;
  • Effectively use food stamps and related resources; and
  • Move toward self-sufficiency.

Families across Tennessee are joining with each other and with local agencies to learn through TNCEP programs. These groups are sharing ideas and resources to gain nutrition, health and management skills. With new learned skills families are building better lives for themselves and can participate in solving problems within their communities.

TNCEP is Empowering People through Community Partnerships. This project is funded under an agreement with the Tennessee Department of Human Services in cooperation with Tennessee State University Cooperative Extension Service and Tennessee county coalitions.

Farmer’s Market Fresh

Farmer’s Market Fresh is a program that supports the local Farmer’s Market by encouraging people to use fresh local produce to make healthy eating decisions. 
Hamblen County Farmer’s Market is located in downtown. Call for more information.
Look for the UT Extension Farmer’s Market Fresh booth where you will find a sample of a fresh recipe, a recipe card, and a free gift! Each week there will be a new recipe using a different fruit or vegetable and a new kitchen utensil. Come by every week to try a sample.

Parenting Apart: Effective Co-Parenting

This educational program is for divorcing or separate parents. Beginning January 1, 2001 Tennessee State Legislature implemented law mandating divorcing parents, with minor children, to attend parent education classes. The University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service has developed a four-hour program to meet the needs of divorcing parents.  Pre-registration must be completed. Call University of Tennessee Extension in Hamblen County at 423-586-6111 for a registration form. Cost: $40 or $50 the day of class if space available. *Pre-registration is HIGHLY recommended. Homebuyer Education-

Homebuyer Education is offered for clients who are purchasing a home and would like to know more about what to expect. The online course can be found on:  https://www.ehomamerica.org/utkhamblen

The online course is $99.00 and offered through eHome America. In-person classes are $50.00 and can be scheduled by calling the office at 423-586-6111.

SKILL UP/ SNAP EMPLOYMENT & TRAINING

A program to help clients get jobs, learn skills for better jobs, go back to school or technical training, and skills needed for re-entry to society and adjustment after incarceration.
